Practical questions

A first recognised herpes episode does not date the infection

A first episode you notice is not necessarily the first time herpes has been present. Many people have mild or unrecognised symptoms before seeking help. A new sore needs assessment, but its appearance cannot reliably establish the source or date of infection, and not every genital sore is herpes.

Arrange assessment while sores are present

Tell the service if you have new blisters or ulcers rather than booking only a general blood panel. A clinician may be able to take a lesion sample, which works best before a sore is healing or crusted. Do not scrape the skin yourself or apply harsh products while waiting.

Do not use timing to assign blame

Herpes can be transmitted when a person has no obvious symptoms, and mild symptoms may have been missed. Even a confirmed diagnosis does not identify who transmitted it or establish that a partner was recently unfaithful. Ask for a clinical explanation before drawing conclusions from the timing of your first recognised episode.

Separate symptom control from eradication

Treatment can help manage symptoms and may reduce transmission risk, but there is no cure that removes genital herpes from the body. Ask about the purpose of any prescribed treatment, contact precautions during symptoms and ongoing advice between episodes. Avoid products promising permanent viral clearance or a guaranteed noninfectious state.

Flag pregnancy and significant illness

Tell the clinician promptly if you are pregnant or could be, especially with new genital symptoms. Difficulty passing urine, severe pain or feeling very unwell warrants urgent advice. Ask who will review the result and whether further testing is needed; a blood result alone may not explain a particular sore or its timing.

Common questions

Does a first outbreak prove I caught herpes this week?

No. Symptoms may be recognised long after acquisition, so an outbreak cannot reliably date infection.

Should I wait for a sore to heal before testing?

Ask for assessment promptly while a lesion is present, because lesion-test usefulness can decrease as it heals.

Does no visible sore mean no possible transmission?

No. Herpes can be transmitted without obvious symptoms. Ask about an individual prevention plan.
