Practical questions
Mpox and genital lesions: do not diagnose from a photo
Mpox can cause lesions around the genitals, anus or mouth, but a photograph cannot reliably distinguish it from other conditions. It spreads through close contact, not only sexual activity. Ask for medical advice about an unexplained rash or lesion rather than deciding the diagnosis from an online image gallery.

Describe contact and symptoms without assumptions
Tell the clinician where lesions are, when they began and whether you have fever, swollen glands, rectal pain or trouble urinating. Mention close skin contact, a known contact and relevant travel when asked. There may be few lesions rather than a widespread rash. Neither a person’s identity nor the absence of a particular sexual act can establish the diagnosis or exclude a close-contact infection.
Ask how to attend without exposing others
Contact the medical service before attending if mpox is suspected, so the team can explain the appropriate assessment route and precautions. Avoid sexual and close skin contact while seeking advice, and do not share items that contacted lesions. A condom does not cover every affected skin area. Do not squeeze or open lesions to obtain a specimen yourself; the clinician should decide whether testing is indicated and how it is collected.
Know which problems need urgent review
Severe pain, eye involvement or visual symptoms, inability to urinate, dehydration or significant illness needs urgent care. Tell the team about pregnancy or immune suppression because those details affect risk assessment. This article does not confirm current Dubai case numbers, vaccination availability or a treatment service. Follow the treating team’s instructions about contact precautions and return to activity rather than assuming that one fading lesion means recovery is complete.
Common questions
Is mpox transmitted only through sex?
No. Close skin contact and other relevant contacts can transmit it.
Can one lesion be dismissed because there is no widespread rash?
No. The number and appearance of lesions vary; seek assessment of unexplained findings.
Should I walk into any clinic without calling?
Call ahead when mpox is suspected so the service can advise a suitable pathway and precautions.

Content policy and review statusQuestions before arranging an appointment?
Enquire about the next steps and availability. An enquiry does not confirm a booking or diagnosis and is not an emergency service.
