Practical questions

Pubic lice: itching does not call for a blood test

Pubic lice are an infestation of body hair, usually spread through close contact. A blood test does not diagnose the lice themselves, and itch alone does not prove they are present. Have suspected lice assessed rather than treating every genital itch as either an STI or a cleanliness problem.

Explain what you noticed

Describe itching, visible insects or eggs attached to hair and any affected areas beyond pubic hair. Lice can be difficult to recognise, so do not use a photograph or loose skin flakes as a final diagnosis. A clinician may inspect hair with appropriate equipment. Mention eye or eyelash symptoms specifically; products intended for body hair should not be improvised around the eyes or used for a different infestation.

Separate infestation treatment from STI screening

The team may discuss sexual contacts and offer other STI testing when relevant, but those tests answer separate questions. A negative blood or urine panel cannot establish that hair is free of lice. Conversely, a lice diagnosis does not identify another infection or prove when it was acquired. Ask which contacts need advice and what to do about close contact while the infestation is managed, without assigning blame.

Follow an assessed household plan

Obtain instructions for the correct treatment, affected areas, clothing or bedding and any follow-up. Do not use household insecticide, repeat products excessively or assume shaving replaces treatment. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, skin problems and previous treatment should be disclosed before a product is selected. Persistent itch or visible lice after the advised course needs review of the diagnosis, application and contacts rather than automatic escalation based on an online routine.

Common questions

Can a routine STI blood test detect pubic lice?

No. The infestation is assessed by the affected hair and clinical findings.

Does shaving guarantee clearance?

No. Follow the appropriate treatment and contact or household advice rather than relying on shaving.

Should body-hair treatment be placed near eyelashes?

No. Eye involvement needs professional advice and a suitable treatment approach.
